Jhunjhunu is located in the north-eastern part of Rajasthan. This city is surrounded by Sikar from west-south, Churu from north-west and from the entire north-east area it shares border with Hariyana. This city falls in Shekhawati area.



Jhunjhunu is a very old town, there is not proof found yet about its establishment. It was ruled by Chouhan descent in the Vikram era 1045 AD. In 1450 Mohammad Khan conquered it from Chouhans and ruled here till 1730 AD. Shargul Singh, diwan of nawabs then ruled here after the death of the last nawab Rohilla khan for 12 years. After his death the state was divided into five of his sons and they ruled here till the independence of India.

A story about jhunjhunu is related to Indian mythology. It is said that Pandawas, the heroes of Mahabharat bathed and washed their weapons in the Surya Kund, so many people come here to take dip this holy Kund.


According to census 2011 the total population of Jhunjhunu is 21,37,045 of which male and female were 1,095,896 and 10,41,149 respectively. The density of this place is 361 persons per km square. The sex ratio is 950 females per 1000 males here. The average literacy is 74.13% of which male literacy is 86.90% and female literacy is 60.95%.

Places of Interest

Rani Sati temple is 400 years old temple of Queen Sati. The temple is made of white marbles and colorful paintings. There is only a magnificently artistic portrait of Queen Sati is there in the pradhan mand and no other painting or portrait of other gods or goddesses are there.

Badalgarh fort by built in 17th century as a stable for horses. The extraordinarily beautiful views from the walls of the fort attract many tourists here.

Mandawa, a village in Jhunjhunu is a must visit place in monsoon.

Khetri palace is another beautiful example the ancient art of Jhunjhunu. Bhopalgarh fort, Bissau fort, Tibrewala and Modi haveli, Shyamgarh fort, Bishangarh fort are also some of the fascinating  places of Jhunjhunu to visit.

Taxis are the main medium of travel in the city and are easily available from any place. These are efficient in fairs. Rental cars are also available.

Jaipur is nearest airport to reach Jhunjhunu, and is around 2 and half hour away from it.

Jhunjhunu railway station is directly connected with few major cities, you can easily reach here via railways, if not direct then you can reach via major stations like Jaipur, Delhi, Bikaner.

Many public and private, deluxe and non deluxe buses are easily available from here for some major cities if you want reach here via roadways.


The district has only some seasonal rivers like Kantli, Dohan, Singhala, Bhudhinala, Chanderwati, Sukh nadi.
